Breast reconstruction following the removal of a breast due to cancer or other disease is a very rewarding surgery. With today’s breast reconstruction techniques, it is possible to creast a breast that comes close in form and appearance to a natural breast. The surgery is done under general anesthesia at the Auburn Surgery Center or one of the local hospitals, depending on the type of reconstruction chosen. During the consultation your physician will explain the surgery as well as possible risks and complications and take before photos for your medical record. We recommend you bring a list of any questions or concerns to your consultation.
What options for reconstruction are available to me?
Many different options for reconstruction after a mastectomy are available. Some of the options include skin expansion to allow for breast implants and flap reconstructions. Your physician will discuss each option with you in detail and help you make the decision that is right for you and your desired outcome.
Will my insurance cover breast reconstruction?
Yes, if your breast removal was due to breast cancer your insurance company will cover breast reconstruction. Please check you’re your insurance company for specific information regarding coverage.
Will my insurance pay for my consultation fee?
Yes.
Who is the best candidate for a breast reconstruction?
Most mastectomy patients are appropriate candidates. Your physician will be able to determine if breast reconstruction is right for you.
What is the recovery period for breast reconstruction?
The recovery time varies for each patient. However, many patients return to nonstrenuous work within 2-3 weeks. You will be unable to swim, use hot tubs, or take tub baths for approximately 3 weeks or until sutures are removed. Other individual restrictions and recovery expectations will be discussed during your consultation.
