Frequently Asked Questions
A BREAST LIFT , or mastopexy, helps raise and reshape sagging breasts for a firmer, shapelier look. Breast implants are often used with a breast lift to help add volume to the breasts. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia at the Auburn Surgery Center. During the consultation your physician will: explain the surgery, options and possible risks and complications; have you look through a photo book; try on "sizer implants if implants are to be used;" and take before photos for your medical record. We recommend you bring a list of any questions or concerns to your consultation.
What is a breast lift?
Breast lift, technically called mastopexy, is surgery to uplift and improve the shape of a female breast that sags or is pendulous, but is proportionate with the body frame, has lost firmness and skin elasticity, has a flatter, elongated shape when unsupported, the nipple falls below the breast crease, has a nipple and areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) that point downward, and/or has stretched skin and an enlarged areola. While a breast lift does not generally affect breast function, women who are planning future pregnancies should discuss this with their plastic surgeon. The changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy can minimize or reverse the improvement a breast lift provides. Likewise, plans for significant weight loss should also be discussed. There are many variations to the procedure, however, our surgeons use a pattern with three incisions which would be around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease. Through these incisions, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height. If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced by excising skin at the perimeter. Excess breast skin is removed to compensate or a loss of elasticity.
How much does a breast lift cost?
Our breast lifts start at $5,375* without implants and include: physician fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and 12 months of office visits. Breast lifts with saline implants start at $7,200. Breast lifts with gel implants start at $7,900.
Is there a consultation fee?
Yes, the consultation fee is $100. However, if you have approved financing with our financing company OR pay the 20% scheduling deposit and schedule the surgery at your consultation to take place in the next 30 days, we will waive this fee. If you do not schedule at the consultation, we will deduct the $100 off of the price of the procedure as long as you have the surgery within 30 days of the consultation.
Who are the best candidates for a breast lift?
Women who are over the age of 18, do not smoke and have sagging breasts from weight loss, breast feeding, or reduced skin elasticity due to age.
What is the recovery period for breast lifts?
The recovery time varies for each woman. However, many women return to nonstrenuous work within 1-2 weeks. You will be unable to swim, use hot tubs, or take tub baths for 2-3 weeks or until sutures are removed. You will not be able to lift anything heavier than 3-5 pounds for the first week after surgery and then nothing heavier than 15 pounds for two more weeks. Other individual restrictions and recovery expectations will be discussed during your consultation.
What kind of scars can I expect with a breast lift?
An incision is made along the crease underneath the breast and around the areola (nipple). Then, a vertical incision is made at the bottom of the areola down to the incision in the crease. Scars are permanent but will gradually fade over time. However, the final appearance of the scars is determined by your body’s own wound healing capabilities.
Does the surgery have to be paid for up front or do you offer a payment plan?
Yes, all cosmetic surgeries must be paid for in full by the day BEFORE surgery.
